Buxton and the High Peak
From Porches to Pavilions
Trevor Gilman has more than thirty years experience in the design and management of building and engineering projects. Trevors Architectural services involves buildings of all types, but a significant proportion has been in the specialist field of architectural engineering. The scope of the work varies from job to job, but is decided in consultation with the client. With many construction projects this means obtaining the necessary approvals and plans from the local authority. More specialist projects often need to be managed from start to finish.
Architectural Services for Commercial Buildings
Trevor Gilman has been involved in the design of many commercial buildings. A recent project was a building at Dale Road, Buxton occupied by the Black Belt Academy. The portal framed building was designed to fit into an irregular site in order to make the best use of the available space. Other work has been carried out on shops, offices, residential care homes and farms in Buxton and the High Peak. The work has included new shop fronts, conversions, extensions and alterations in general.
Homes
Trevor Gilman has worked on the design of many hundreds of domestic building projects, including several new houses. Flat conversions have been a regular feature of Trevor Gilman’s workload, and there are many examples in the Buxton area. Numerous house extensions have been designed, most requiring planning permission and Building Regulations approval. Trevor Gilman’s experience can help owners through the minefield of legislation and planning. A large number of houses have been extended upwards into the loft, where care is necessary to comply with all of the special provisions. Conservatories and porches have special considerations of their own. This is another area where Trevor Gilman’s wide experience can help homeowners. Barn conversions have been designed at a number of locations including Buxton, the Peak District National Park and as far away as Kirkby Lonsdale.
Public Buildings
Trevor Gilman has worked on designs involving buildings with public access including theatres, licensed premises and churches. The Buxton Opera House was recently fitted with comfortable upholstered seats in the Gallery, where previously there had only been backless padded benches. The seats were larger than the benches that they replaced, and so a new stepped floor was installed. A listed building planning application was submitted for this and other improvement work. The Pavilion Gardens bandstand was built in 1997 in Buxton. The design for the superstructure was taken from architect’s concept drawings and developed into a set of detailed drawings. The eight Octagon windows and the corona were replaced in 1993. Trevor Gilman produced the detailed manufacturing and installations drawings.
External Works
The Buxton bandstand has proved to be iconic, appearing on postcards and publicity material for a variety of uses. Other design work at the Pavilion Gardens, Buxton has include the cast iron work to the new kiosk close to the lake, and surveying the complex layout of the railings to The Square.
