Assisting disabled people throughout Bury and the UK

Support Dogs is a very different charitable organisation which can improve the quality of life for people living with either epilepsy or physical disabilities and families of children who have autism. This is done by training dogs to be safe assistants and making them as efficient as possible. Support Dogs support people and their families throughout Bury and the whole of the UK. The charity has trained over 150 dogs and offers support for over 60 partnerships in the UK, with clients achieving a great physical and mental independence. Each dog is trained to different capabilities in order to assist with an individual's specific disability - anything from Seizures to Autism.

Seizure Assistance Dogs

The Support Dogs team have trained dogs to be an immense aid to people suffering with epilepsy. It is the most common neurological illness and has over 450,000 cases in the UK alone. 70% of these cases can be controlled by drugs; however the remaining 30% have to live in fear of an attack striking without warning. Support dog's help the situation as they can respond and alert their owners to a forthcoming epileptic seizure providing them with security and independence, allowing them to go to a safe place.

Disability Assistance Dogs

Only a mere 17% of people in the UK that are disabled were born with it, which means that the remaining percentage develop their disabilities later in life and find it hard to deal with. Disability Assistance Dogs are unique as they act as family pets, and the loving bond between an owner and their pet channels the dog's willingness. Some owners rely on their dog for mobility and independence especially in public places, making it clear how supportive these dogs can be. The tasks the dogs can be trained to do are profound, such as ringing an ambulance, opening doors, picking up objects, carrying items, loading the washing machine and assisting an owner whilst dressing. The abilities of these dogs allow clients in Bury and all over the country to leave their home feeling safe and confident reducing their stress levels.

Autism Assistance Dogs

Autism affects the way a person communicates with others, and makes simple interaction difficult. More than 535,000 people are believed to be autistic in the UK today, effecting around 2.3 million people such as family members; it is estimated that 72,724 children and families would benefit from having AA dogs. Every autistic child is different, however many have mobility issues and a basic lack of awareness of danger and they also exhibit behaviour that leads to social isolation. Therefore an AA dog would provide people living with autism a sense of comfort, safety and freedom, and would promote positive behaviour. It would also benefit the family as they would feel a lot more at ease.
