Bury Independent Living Development (Bury ILD) was first established in 1993 and aims to enable independent living for adults with learning disabilities.
This independence is achieved in a number of ways, from working with families and communities to building relationships and assisting supported living.
Bury ILD was started by a group of parents who wanted ensure that their sons and daughters could be settled in homes of their own with the support that they needed. The charity actively encourages family members to be involved in their relatives lives on a regular basis and be part of the planned support alongside Bury ILD's paid staff.
Purpose
Bury ILD provides support tailored to individual wishes, strengths and needs by working closely with families, local and government agencies. The service can range from 24 hour support for complex needs to more targeted planning for individuals still living in the family home.
Bury ILD believes that all people with learning disabilities are entitled to:
- Be treated as individuals
- Be involved in all decision making
- Be involved in choosing support staff
- Be encouraged to express their own views
- Have equal rights for choice, respect and opportunity
- Have a continued relationship with their families if wished
- Be supported in the local community according to their needs
Support
Bury ILD provide excellent support which allows people to develop at a rate at which they feel comfortable. Activities provided by Bury ILD can undertaken on a personal basis or in a group and a great opportunity to introduce new experiences with the appropriate preparation, explanation and agreement.
Support is provided on an individual basis according to the four key principles in the government's 2001 white paper "Valuing People" which includes rights, independence, choice and inclusion.
By working in this way Bury ILD helps people to become valued members of the community and lead fulfilled lives of their choosing.
