Snow in Burton on Trent!

Bookmark and Share

Snow blanketed the streets of Burton-on-Trent this weekend causing a spate of minor accidents and keeping taxis and buses off the road on what would normally have been a busy Saturday night.

It meant lots of fun for the young, and young at heart, in and around the town who found up to six inches of snow was ideal for building giant snowmen and even igloos.

But there was a more serious side with a spate of road accidents in the area. Fortunately most were minor shunts as cars slid on the slushy toads and did not result in serious injuries.

Football fans missed their fix of weekend action as local fixtures were abandoned. Burton Albion’s away game at Swindon Town was postponed and the much-anticipated clash between local rivals Derby County and Nottingham Forest was also called off.

Staffordshire County Council gritters were out ahead of the snow - but the snow settled so deeply that the grit was unable to make any difference. But some motorists have told the Burton Mail they think the local authorities could have done more.

Despite the treacherous conditions, more than 100 people still turned out at the town's Brewhouse Arts Centre on Saturday night for a charity comedy sketch show - Cirque Du Solaughs - organised to raise funds for Oxfam. The organisers thanked all those who made it through the snow.

Today the big melt has started, but drivers have been urged to take care as ice and fog could still be an issue in some places.
