Why should I bother buying locally?

Let's face it, it's a membership we're all instantly part of. By living or working in an area, we are instantly part of the community and all have a role to play within it.

Bromley Borough is no exception. We've all heard the news nationally about how tough times are for the retail sector, and Bromley Borough isn't immune to the challenges. In times of recession, it's even more important to support local, independent businesses who are also trying to keep their heads above water and compete against the national giants. With more of said giants out there who seem to have an ever increasing presence on our high streets, we mustn't forget the local independent businesses who shape our high street, giving it character and a sense of collective well-being.

One such business is The Lavender House Cafe in Sundridge Park Village. Set up by Niki Hammond Watt in 2009, The Lavender House is now firmly ensconced as a hub of the local community. The focus is all about local - Niki prides herself on providing a family friendly, memorable experience to their customers by offering value for money, exceptional service and beautifully presented products within a relaxed atmosphere.

And it seems that we're not the only ones who think that The Lavender House is a fantastic local business within Bromley Borough that we should all be supporting - News Shopper recently voted it number one for Bromley's best coffee shops!

Baccarat Hair in Beckenham high street is another business that flies the flag for local. An independent salon that has been in business through the highs and lows of the retail sector since 1979 and has not only lived to tell the tale, but been awarded Bromley's most-loved salon' by locals in 2011, 2012 and 2013!

And when it comes to eating out, we really are spoilt for choice if we'd like to avoid the national chain restaurants with their identical menus and decor. One such gem is La Rascasse in Beckenham. Popular with local residents and businesses alike, La Rascasse has a wonderful variety of freshly made dishes using locally sourced ingredients wherever possible - who could ask for more?

So to keep your local Bromley Borough community thriving, please pledge your support for thebestof's Buy Local week. By buying local, you buy into your community, all of which helps to make it a better place.

Let's face it, we all want successful local businesses that deliver that personal touch, great customer service and a happy retail experience.
