Bristol owes a lot of its grand buildings and general wealth to the slave trade (which, by the way, the 'city' apologised for last year). The Georgian House Museum is a building just off Park Street that has been restored to its original grandeur, to around the time of the 18th century slave trade. The house was owned by one of the original slave merchants, and both the grand rooms on the upper levels, and the lower servants quarters have been restored, enabling an excellent cross section view of the quality of lives that all the people involved with this house had - both good and bad.
After seeing plenty of Georgian architecture from the outside in areas such as Clifton, you can enjoy a nose inside, too, at the Georgian House Museum just off Park Street. This place has been reconstructed inside to match how it would have appeared in the 18th century, giving you an insight into life both above the stairs and below, in the servants' quarters. The house was built for merchant and slave trader John Pinney in 1790, and is also the former home of Pero Jones, a slave brought to Bristol from Nevis by Pinney. It's easy to miss this place, but well worth tracking it down. There's excellent attention to detail in recreating the home, and you can learn quite a bit about the history of the slave trade and Bristol's role in it.
