Queen's Square once had a dual carriage way running through it, according to my Bristol-born boyfriend, but it's hard to imagine it all clogged up with cars and pollution. Today this lovely green space has a feeling of grandeur, lined with elegant Georgian terraced buildings that have recently been restored to their former glory. Crossed by diagonal paths, it has a pleasing symmetry centring around an equestrian statue of William III by John Michael Rysbrack, erected in 1736. During the summer, it is popular for summer lunch breaks, sunbathing and picnics, and also plays host to various events, too, including music and theatre events - many of them completely free.

If you are passionate about traditional, English restaurants in Bristol serving high quality food in a relaxing, rustic interior, visit Howard's restaurant. We're one of the longest running restaurants in the city.

The food was lovely, a really good choice on the set menu (£9.95 for 2 courses) and (£12.95 for 3) which was very reasonable, lots of veg to accompany. Service was not rushed and was very pleasant, wine was lovely and NOT overpriced. Even the a la carte menu was reasonably priced. The restaurant was not too busy but there were half a dozen tables booked, some ordering champagne (also very reasonably priced). Food was cooked to perfection. There were 4 of us and we eat out a lot, stands up to Goldbrick House and Hotel du Vin any day
