The Sussex Coastline 2 - Newhaven

Sussex has many miles of beautiful coastline ....in my second blog I talk about Newhaven.

Newhaven may not be your first thoughts when think of a piece of coastline but believe me it is a splendid place to take a stroll along the cliffs. If you like a longer walk you may even try walking from the coast along the River Ouse to Lewes which is about 7 miles away – by walking away from the river when you get north of Piddinghoe you can get some great views of the river valley by taking  a modest detour uphill.

There are a number of wrecks off the shore at least one of which is visible as can be seen in my photo. I’m not sure whether this is the Devon Coast steamer which sunk in 1908 or HMS Ocean Sunlight which was 131 ton Drifter – perhaps someone can advise me? Wrecks also include the Barn Hill steamer which caught fire when a German bomber dropped a bomb down its funnel in 1940 when it was on its way from London to Nova Scotia. They provide a great attraction to divers

Why not combine a walk along the cliffs with a visit to Newhaven Fort where you can not only get great views of South Downs and Sussex coast, but also explore the underground runnels that have been cut into the chalk cliffs.

Surprisingly Newhaven Fort dates back as far as the  bronze age. It was rebuilt by the Romans because of the strategic importance of site by the River Ouse. What can be seen today dates back to around 1860. A visit to the Fort will allow you to get a feel for how the place was during the World War II
