Conservative Mid Sussex Councillor Katy Bourne has been voted in as the first Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) for Sussex in an election on the 15th November.

She came ahead of her nearest rival, Labour's Godfrey Daniel, on second preference votes after neither candidate secured 50% of the vote.

The turnout was a low 15.82%, inclusive of spoilt ballot papers, commensurate with other low turnouts in PCC elections held across England yesterday.

The role of Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) was introduced to bring direct democratic accountability to England’s policing.

Ms Bourne's will take over responsibilty for overseeing Sussex Police, including appointing and dismissing the chief constable. Other responsibilities listed on her website are noted as:

setting priorities for the Police in Sussex by producing a Police & Crime Plan

setting the annual force budget in consultation with the Chief Constable, ensuring that local and national priorities are suitably funded, 

setting the council tax precept for the police

holding the Chief Constable to account for delivery and performance of the force


Ms Bourne is a Mid Sussex district councillor, businesswoman and national chairwoman of the Conservative Women's Organisation. She lives in Mid Sussex with husband Kevin and two grown-up sons William and Myles.
