If you’re out and about at the seaside this month, look out for starfish as these dazzling sea creatures can be spotted in rock pools or on the beach…

  • Are unmistakable with their five arms and rows of tube feet on the underside which they use to propel themselves slowly along the sea floor
  • The strong suction of these tube feet make it difficult for a predator to eat the entire starfish
  • Have the ability to push their stomachs out of their mouths in order to digest prey too big to swallow
  • A missing limb is not a problem as the starfish has the ability to re-grow its limbs
  • Are active carnivores and also scavengers feeding on mussels, crustaceans, worms and sea urchins
