Science geeks from across Brighton and Hove and beyond are set to take the streets of the city by polite storm throughout February as a veritable feast of science events hits town. It's the 2012 Brighton Science Festival and it's hot throughout February. So what's the story?
The Science Festival kicked off eight years ago. Described by Director Richard Robinson as "The best way to discover where we came from, deal with where we are and debate where we might go in the future.", it's an impressive event jam packed with science-related excitement and fun for every age and taste.
Here's just a few of the forty eight or more events taking place this year:
- How to be magic
- The Chewy Gummy Physics Funfair
- Life, the universe and everything - a real ripping yarn about how the univserse was created, presented by Brighton and Hove Humanist Society
- Hammer & Tongue, a science-themed poetry slam
- The Quabinet of Quantum Curiosities
- Brighton Sceptics - Secular Medicine - a discussion about the need for a clear secular voice in medicine
- The Catalyst Club presents 'Catastrophe' a discussion about human beings' complex relationship with the notion of catastrophe
- Marcus Brigstock talks about his atheism in 'God Collar'
- Festival of the Spoken Nerd
You can join in with all manner of activities and creative pursuits, making a dinosaur from old towels, crocheting a coral reef, making your own spectrometer, teaming up with BuildBrighton to bring drawings to life viaKinnect and seeing what makes toys tick by... trashing them!
Helen Keen, the award winning comedian, will be bringing comedy, science and shadow puppetry to the fore. You can join in the festival's scientific cake competition and there's loads for the kids to do at half term too, between Saturday 11th and Sunday 19th. Stuff like the Pocket Science Funfair, Bright Sparks and White Heat Family Day will keep your youngsters happy and entertained despite the weather.
