As Russell Automotive Centre passed their first year anniversary Director Jane Russell commented: 'It means so much to us that our customers recognise the quality of our services and have voted us their winner. We were up against some extremely good Independents throughout the UK - some of whom have been in business for many years. We are delighted.'

thebestof Brent would like to offer its sincerest congratulations to Russell Automotive Centre and we caught up with Steve and his wife Jane at the automotive centre and asked the following questions. We thought we would share this with you.

What are you the best at?
We are best at providing honest quality advice and service. The fact that we have the same diagnostic equipment compulsory for a main dealer makes us unique in North London as we charge less for the our knowledge of its use than the main dealers do, therefore offering quality and technology at affordable prices. Steve has 21 years experience in the trade and is one of the top technicians in the UK (Source: ATA) and is a fully qualified, dealer trained Audi & Volkswagen Master Technician- the highest level of qualification you can achieve in the VAG brand.

How did you start or choose to be in this business?
Following a redundancy at an Audi main dealer (the company sold off a lot of its assets) we decided that Steve had so much more knowledge than his colleagues and employers on the technical aspect of Audis and VWs that we thought we would be able to make a good business ourselves and reap our own rewards!

Why should anyone choose you?
We are quite simply specialists. Apart from the obvious that we are much more affordable than a main dealer you may ask why choose a specialist who may very well be more expensive than a garage down the road that works on any make of car. Having only dealer trained technicians no fault can surprise us. As we are so familiar with the models we work with and carry very extensive specific tools enabling us to diagnose, repair and advice with ease. We can get straight to the route of the problem quickly and simply as our knowledge guides us there a lot quicker than someone however capable they are, with limited knowledge of the problems the VAG cars can suffer. Is 3 hours non-specialist labour to diagnose and repair at £40 an hour better then 1 hour of specialist labour at £58.50? The answer is no!

Why are you in this particular business?
We are passionate about quality service. We believe that there can be an alternative to main dealers without compromising on anything apart from the glass and chrome of the building - but who wants to pay for that?! We also are trying to change the perception of smaller garages. The industry unfortunately has a bad reputation and we want to change that.

What are you most proud of about this business?
Winning the Gold Award for Best Independent Service Provider 2008 at the Audi Driver Annual Awards. A huge achievement in our first 11 months of trading. We were up against garages that had been in business for years.

What is the best thing one of your customers has ever said about you?
"I found this garage to be very helpful and friendly it was like going to a `Bupa` hospital for cars, but at a much lower cost. I will certainly use this garage again and recommend it to all my friends."

What would you like your clients to say about you?
That we are reliable, honest, experienced and the best!
