TEENAGERS CAN BOX CLEVER
Another sport is being introduced to the council-run local scheme which gives teenagers something to do on a Friday evening instead of hanging around on the streets.
Midnight Soccer - a national initiative - has been running in Kirklees for over two years and has proved hugely successful. Now Midnight Boxing is being introduced – Friday evening sessions start at Cleckheaton Boxing Club, Dewsbury Road, Cleckheaton, from October 8.
“Not everyone likes football. When we asked the youngsters what other sport they would enjoy, most said boxing – so we have joined with Cleckheaton Boxing Club to provide training sessions,” said Kirklees Sports Development Officer Neil Jones.
The sessions, from 6pm-8pm, will be free and are aimed as 14 to 19-year-olds, male and female. The club will provide all equipment, coaching and instruction in boxercise, boxfit and boxing. The sessions will also include DJ workshops.
Partners in the local schemes are the council’s Young People Service, West Yorkshire Police, who were instrumental in setting up Cleckheaton Boxing Club, the Amateur Boxing Association, West Yorkshire Fire Service and West Riding County Football Association.
