Changes to car tax disks in 2014

From 1st October you will no longer have to display your car tax disk in your windscreen, instead everything is going to be done electronically.

Car owners will need to register their car online to pay their road tax or vehicle excise duty. You can do this via direct debit, at the post office or on the DVLA website. This was all announced by the Chancellor George Osborne in autumn 2013.

If you don’t register for the tax ANPR cameras could spot your untaxed disk on the road and you’ll face the consequences, including heavy fines.

This change is particularly important if you’re buying a used car from Crompton Way Motors. If there are several months left on your tax disk, it won’t be transferred with the car, so you’ll need to renew the tax disk straight away or risk being caught by the police in an untaxed car. The sell will get a refund on full calendar months left on the vehicle tax.

The person selling the car has to tell the DVLA about the new owner or risk a £1,000 fine. Doing so is simple, just fill in a V5C form and send it back to them.
