Although Safety Net offers support and professional service in all aspects of health and safety, the Bolton-based company specialise in affordable PAT testing for businesses across the area.
What is Portable Appliance Testing (PAT)?
Portable Appliance Testing is the means by which an employer can prove that they have maintained any electrical equipment in a safe manner, reducing the risk of injury or fire hazards.
Safety Net's highly skilled, fully trained and qualified technicians carry out testing in accordance with the Institute of Electrical Engineers (IEE) Code of Conduct, whilst causing minimum disruption to your business.
PAT testing is needed for any item of equipment exceeding 50 volts and powered by a plug or socket. Safety Net will be happy to advise you on any exceptions to this general rule where necessary.
Who needs PAT testing?
All employers and those legally responsible for preventing any harm coming to employees, customers, tenants and members of the public need to have electrical appliances regularly PAT tested.
PAT testing is particularly important when you consider that every year around 1000 accidents at work involving electric shocks or burns are reported to the Health and Safety Executive and about 30 of these are fatal. Faulty electrical appliances and leads are also the main direct cause of accidental fires in business premises.
PAT testing carried out in accordance with the IEE Code of Conduct is widely accepted as the correct way to manage these risks and it is also worth noting that failure to implement regular PAT testing could jeopardise an insurance claim.
What tests are carried out?
Technicians from Safety Net will first carry out a visual inspection of electrical appliances, as most potentially dangerous faults are picked up at this stage. The technicians will then carry out electrical testing with state of the art equipment including the plug and lead, continuity test, insulation resistance test and an earth leakage test.
All successfully tested items are marked with a pass label and any that have failed will have the plugs removed and be given to your maintenance department. Minor repairs such as fitting new plug tops and correctly sized fuses are carried out free of charge.
Results can be provided on a CD, by email or on paper records where requested. Safety Net are also extremely flexible and can work outside normal business hours or at weekends by arrangements.
