It can be difficult to keep track of how much water you use, often resulting in a higher bill than it needs to be.
There's plenty of ways you can cut down on your water consumption, here's a few ideas!
Don’t keep the tap running!
By minimizing the amount of time that you keep your tap running, you can cut a nice chunk off your water bill. If you're washing dishes, partially fill your sink with water for washing your crockery and give each item a very quick rinse under the tap before leaving it to dry as opposed to washing everything under a flowing tap. If you're shaving or brushing your teeth, turn off the tap in between rinses.
Don’t use the toilet as a bin!
As easy it is to throw your used disposables into the toilet and flush it away into the ether, you’re also flushing gallons of water every single time. The average toilet flush wastes up to 7 gallons of water, which really adds up over time and ends up costing you a lot of money - especially if you’re flushing when you don’t need to!
Save money on showers!
How long do you tend to take in the shower? As nice as a long, hot shower may be - it will be costing you! Keep this in mind and try to shorten your shower time. 5 minutes in the shower is usually enough time to cleanse and hydrate your skin, so no need to overdo it! Maybe set yourself a timer or create a short, efficient showering routine so you don’t waste time. Also, baths tend to be more cost-effective than showers so if you’ve got time to partially fill your tub then it may be the best option.
Be efficient with your laundry and dish-washing!
Only load your washing machine when you have a full load of laundry. Create a plan to ensure that you’re running a wash as infrequently as you can. Don’t start a wash for just a few items unless you really need them urgently - always wait until you’ve got more laundry or at least have a look around your home and see if there's anything worth washing such as bed-sheets and pillow cases. The same goes with dish-washing, if you use a dishwasher then you should always wait until it is fully loaded until you turn it on.
Invest in water-saving products!
There is a massive range of products available to help people save money on water. These include low flush toilets and high efficiency washing machines, both drastically minimizing the amount of water that gets consumed when they are running. Dishwashers are also great for saving water when used properly, often using much less water than washing by hand. There’s also a great selection of more affordable water-saving products to install in your home such as tap aerators, water-efficient shower-heads and leak-detection strips.
