Don’t forget the deadline to submit your ticket application for the 2012 Olympic Games is this Tuesday, 26 April 2011 by 11.59pm. 6.6 million tickets have been released to spectators in Britain. Click here if you haven’t already requested your tickets and we hope you get the events you want to see.

We thought this was a good opportunity to look at the opportunities the Games will bring to our region. Here is just a small snapshot of how we could all benefit from the Games next year!

Bishop's Stortford is conveniently situated just 30 minutes from the main

Olympic site.  As the Olympics approaches our very own Stort Valley Olympic Committee, an independent organisation loosely associated with the Council, is organising a series of events in Bishop's Stortford and Sawbridgeworth, to take place throughout the second half of 2011 and 2012.  The first of these is a Competition to design a logo to symbolise and inspire the Olympic related events in the area. Stansted Airport businessman, Terry Farthing, called on other local companies to wake up to the opportunities the Games will bring. Terry serves on the Stort Valley Olympic Committee and has lived and worked in the Stortford area for over 30 years. He said: "We have a hard-working team here at Airport Lettings and with 500 days to go until the opening ceremony this is not just about saying rent your home through us - this is about making sure that businesses large and small get really focused for next year and this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity." "Thousands of individuals and families from across the world will visit our shores not only for the two weeks of the Games but for months and years afterwards. It is that legacy which businesses can benefit from and, with only 500 days to go, we need to all make sure we do what we can to welcome people to Essex." Click here for more.

How could you personally benefit from the Games?

As the town is so close to the main event consider some ways of becoming part of the activities. How about:

  • Going along to enjoy your favourite events?
  • Renting out your house or a room to tourists wishing to stay close-by
  • Renting out your driveway to spectators wanting to shorten their journey on public transport
  • Holding special offers and events for your own business around the Games to bring extra revenue and custom in from the hoards of people who will be going
  • Use your imagination and be creative! This is a once in a lifetime event, think of how you can enjoy the Games to the max and plan ahead. It will be here before you know it!

We would love to hear about your special link to the Olympics. Get blogging and let us know your stories at thebestof Bishop’s Stortford.
