A team effort
Mark's Garden Services is owned by Mark Stradling, a former soldier who spent years building up the business and gaining a reputation for quality and service. As his client base and work grew, his stepson, Matt, started working alongside him.
However, a serious illness diagnosed in 2009 meant that Mark was unable to manage the physically demanding work that was expected of him on a daily basis; therefore, he had to take a step back and assess the future of his business, focusing on how to provide efficient services and ensuring that his customers would still be able to rely on Mark and Matt to deliver the goods. The choice was simple - to wind down or find somebody else who could step in to take on Mark's work.
As Mark explains, "A chance meeting with Steve made the decision easy - an incredibly practical, reliable and hardworking man, he fitted seamlessly into the business, learning the way that we work and to ensure continuity for customers.
"I am delighted that Mark's Garden Services is a team effort and as close to a family business as you can get without actually being related! The business is based on my stepfather's love of plants and gardening and my father's values of openness and honesty, so it seems only right that this collaboration carries on to the next generation."
