Butterwick Hospice at Bishop Auckland provides many services to communities around the Durham Dales area including day care, palliative home care, outreach day hospices and services to heart failure and multiple sclerosis patients.
Butterwick is based in the north east of England and has three hospices, two adult hospices in Stockton on Tees and Bishop Auckland and one children's hospice, Butterwick House, also in Stockton on Tees.
Butterwick provides specialist palliative care to children and adults with life limiting illnesses and provides that care in a friendly and homely environment.
The aim of Butterwick Hospice Care is to improve the quality of life for our patients and their families and to help them relate positively to every challenge they may encounter during their illness. We aim to help people see death as a part of life's journey.
We provide holistic centred care and respond to and respect the patients' and families' individual physical, social, cultural, educational, spiritual and emotional needs throughout the illness and bereavement.
It is our aim to acknowledge and respect the way each family cares for their relative and we endeavour to continue that chosen pattern of care. We work together to develop an environment based on support and mutual respect.
We reflect on our experiences of care in order to improve the quality of our service and welcome suggestions and guidance from our patients and families to help us achieve the highest standards possible.
Butterwick works together with other service providers to ensure continuity of care is provided.
Today Butterwick Hospice Care helps up to 200 patients and their families each day. Now expanded into a purpose built hospice in Stockton on Tees and another Hospice in Bishop Auckland from where the organisation provides services throughout the North Tees and Durham Dales PCT areas.
October 1998 saw the opening of Butterwick House Children's Hospice which provides care and support to families across the North East.
