Robert A Stuart is an artist specialising in pastels whose portraiture, landscapes and skies are phenomenally beautiful. Robertâs studio is located close to Beaconsfield.
Based in his High Wycombe studio, Robert A Stuart is an artist who produces the most fabulous pastel works. He specialises in landscapes and skies although his love for figurative and representational worlds is also evident across his portfolio.
Robert uses soft pastels, an art medium in the form of a stick, which has a higher proportion of pigment to binder resulting in brighter colours. The pastel medium was first mentioned by Leonardo da Vinci in 1495 and was used by artists such as Maurice Quentin de La Tour and Rosalba Carriera as far back as the 18th C when it became fashionable to use for portrait painting.
Pastels became popular in modern art because of the medium's broad range of bright colours. This art medium also allows the drawing to be readily smudged and blended. Using pastel card, which has a similar surface to that of fine sandpaper and which can take more pigment, allows Robert to layer the colour. Robert usually starts his work with a dark ground - black blue or grey - adding layers to build up the outline of the subject to achieve his desired effect. The fast drying time of pastels also allows Robert to work constantly on one piece allowing him to maintain the ambience of the work.
Robert was initially taught by his mother, a Camberwell art student who herself was tutored by John Minton, Claude Rogers and Victor Passmore. Thereafter Robert attended evening classes where he was tutored by Marion Archer and studied portraiture with Varvara Neiman.
Robert's High Wycombe Studio is surrounded by other artists and traditional craft businesses and is really worth a visit to see him at work and to view his wonderful portfolio of work. You can also view Robert's pieces at Woodcraft Flooring, 22 Aylesbury End, Beaconsfield, HP9 1LW.

What I liked about the two pictures I chose was the richness of colour and textureâ¦the build up of layers and the top strokes as if âhanging overâ the surface like leaves fluttering in the breeze.
There were lots of great comments from customers over the past couple of days when we had your finished pieces in the workshop, they really are beautiful. Alison at Bespoke Framing
