For internet marketing, web design and CRM Business Services that can be measured in terms of real results, i.e. money, speak to Elton Boocock of Urban Media
Since starting his own business at the age of 24, Elton Boocock has made his mark through his instinct for knowing what it takes to make a business a success. He set up his company, Urban Media which is recognised for consistently delivering high standards both in terms of the websites built and the customer service offered.
Originally, working with Audio and Video, Urban Media rapidly realised that the internet would be the prime delivery medium for such items. The company quickly established itself in the new market of website design. Through working with the first version of 'Flash', Urban Media were considered at the cutting edge of new media. As a direct result Urban Media immediately attracted the attention of marketing companies and blue chip clients.
Elton achieved a level of success through Urban Media but wanted something new. Three years in and he launched the Haulage industries biggest website: uk-trucking.net. The site was a phenomenal success with over 5 million visitors per month using the site to find various information, news and services. Advertisers on the site included the major truck manufacturers, fuel companies and tyre companies and it was being quoted regularly in national press and trade journals.
However, after 3 years of running the site, the whole £125,000 investment was gone. Despite there being high profile advertisers on board, Elton pulled the plug on it having realised that Urban Media was propping up the massively popular, but sadly unprofitable uk-trucking.net. The failure proved to be the catalyst in making Urban Media the hugely successful business it is today.
Prior to the uk-trucking.net experience, Urban Media had been focused in the same way as most current website design companies on great looking design and at the time (before social media and paid advertising) natural search engine optimisation. The theory was to generate lots of visitors to a website and make the website look good. After the experience, Urban Media realised that this was not enough. You had to monitor the effects of the real results as it was clear that a company, much like the uk-trucking.net website, could have millions of visits, but still make huge losses.
Urban Media used the experience to establish what really made a website a financial success. Over the following years, Elton studied everything from business books, to sales and marketing. He became a master of asking the difficult questions that usually allow a website owner to spend valuable time and money on unproven 'tricks' to success. He refused to follow the fashions, instead looking for real results.
This no-nonsense approach and a solid passion for helping others was a key factor in Elton being awarded the prestigious National Education Business Partnership 'Best Business Partnership Award'. This was a huge achievement as Elton competed against many Blue Chip companies to take the top award.
The same drive, passion and business acumen was spotted as he was asked to assist Peter Jones (Dragons' Den) to select 28 students to form the Pathfinder intake of the first 'National Enterprise Academy'. Elton interviewed all of the shortlisted budding entrepreneurs asking the same opening question; "how many business ideas did you 'can' on the way in today?" believing that the skill of an entrepreneur lies in which ideas you don't take up rather than those you do. Elton later taught the successful students that being an entrepreneur is both a gift and a disease!
Elton was further recognised when he was asked to help the government 'design' the Diploma qualification, helping those who did not fit the typical model for current learning systems. The Creative and Media Diploma, for which Elton is involved, helps the more practically minded student to achieve excellent results in an area that is relevant to their chosen career. Urban Media, and Elton specifically, is very involved with local students on the qualification and Elton provides work experience, mentoring and in school motivational talks to support them.
Elton is also responsible for organising the Urban Allstar Rally which saw teams driving a banger from High Wycombe through Europe and back to High Wycombe, completing a series of challenges along the way, all in the aid of charity.
Urban Media have remained at the cutting edge in terms of internet and subsequently new media technology such as Facebook and Twitter, but what makes them stand out is their uncompromised focus on return on investment. Elton says: "Google positions, creative design, clever database interactivity, social media and in fact whatever comes next, are all just tools. The minute we begin to measure them in relation to success, we are missing the point. Most businesses are in business to make money. Let's measure that!"
When you talk to Elton, you get a real sense that much of this is history and it is the future he is more interested in. This is a future where he believes he can help even more people and this certainly comes across when you meet him. Recently he led a team of business owners to deliver a massively successful business to business exhibition that he had carried a vision for over several years.
The company have been so successful that they have launched their own Customer Relationship Management solution, Highway, because they couldn't find anything available to buy that offered the toolset that they needed to help clients in the way that met Urban Media's extremely high standards.
