GET READY...BEKONSCOT MODEL VILLAGE WILL OPEN FOR 2012 FROM SATURDAY 11TH FEBRUARY ... THE MODEL VILLAGE AND RAILWAY IS FUN FOR ALL AGES...COME ON IN FOR A GREAT DAY OUT!
The inspiration behind Bekonscot Model Village and Railway came from wealthy London accountant Roland Callingham. When his original indoor model railway outgrew his home, he commissioned the model railway firm, Basset-Lowke to build the largest Gauge 1 garden railway in England. Winding its way around Roland's swimming pool, the railway and village took life in the form of model houses and rockeries to complement it. Since 1929 the original Bekonscot Model Village and Railway has developed and the little kingdom is now spread over one and a half acres and every part is full of fascinating detail - and humour!
Seven little villages - Greenhaily, Bekonscot, Southpool Fishing Village, Hanton, Splashyng, Evenlode, and Evenlode New Town - are linked by the model railway. The Bekonscot Model Railway (BMR) runs along almost 10 scale miles (400 real metres) of fully-signalled main line and branch line track, serving seven stations. Every day there are between seven and ten trains running at any one time, controlled from the full-size Maryloo Signal Box.
As you wander around Bekonscot you will see its inhabitants enjoying their own local days out and attractions - entertainment such as cricket, cinema, a zoo, a racecourse, the fair, castles as well as working models of coal mines, an oil refinery, and an aerodrome.
In addition to the model village and railway, there are plenty of other things to enjoy at Bekonscot. Many Bekonscot visitors cannot resist the attraction of the ride-on railway - the Bekonscot Light Railway (BLR) which weaves through the model village and the remote controlled boats. Take advantage of the picnic area to eat and refresh yourself and if the children get fidgety they can run around in the children's play area. If you need extra supplies then there is a refreshments kiosk available.
Bekonscot has been featured on a number of TV programmes, including Blue Peter, Muffin the Mule and Midsomer Murders. It has also played host to over 14 million visitors since 1929, as well as a succession of royal visitors, which includes Queen Elizabeth II who became a lifelong fan after she came for her eight birthday.
There is no doubt that Bekonscot is a wonderful place for group visits and school outings as well as family days out and birthday parties. It is a must-see for tourists looking for things to do in Beaconsfield.
This national treasure not only provides entertainment for all who attend but also has a strong charitable ethos. Every week Bekonscot plays host to one or two parties who attend for free giving them a chance to enjoy a fun day out which they might not otherwise be able to do. In addition, since its inception, Bekonscot Model Village and Railway has distributed more than £1.5 million to a range of charities both large and small including:
It is estimated that allowing for inflation the total of charitable donations in real terms is £5, 500,000.
Make sure you visit the wonderful Bekonscot Model Village and Railway. This "...little piece of history that is forever England" is a truly rewarding experience for hundreds of thousands each year and all profits are used to support charities both large and small.
