Prior Park College, Bath. – one of the largest, co-educational independent HMC Catholic Boarding and Day Schools in the UK. 11-18 Day; 13-18 Boarding.
- Open Door Day - Friday 7 May 2010 - 11 am - 1 pm
Prior Park College is set in 57 acres of grounds overlooking the World Heritage City of Bath. It is an extraordinarily happy, friendly and successful Catholic Christian community with an open ecumenical spirit. Academic achievement is a vital foundation although ‘success’ is defined in the broadest and most inclusive way. The College strives to create the conditions where every pupil is engaged, challenged and encouraged. Pupils work hard and are well motivated, being supported by positive teaching. Strategies for supporting gifted and talented pupils are in place and are continually reviewed and developed.
“As an independent Catholic school, we encourage pupils to think for themselves, form opinions, communicate well and respect other points of view, but debate vigorously. Beyond very high academic expectations, we want our leavers to be fulfilled and well-rounded.” Giles Mercer, Headmaster.
The school has outstanding facilities including a Sixth Form Centre, ICT centre, Astroturf and heated indoor swimming pool. Over 20 music, drama and dance productions are held in the magnificent Chapel, theatre and Mackintosh Studio. There is a broad and balanced sporting curriculum, with excellent facilities, promoting sporting excellence and sporting opportunities for all.
Exciting changes are ahead for 2009. A purpose-built two-storey junior House for day pupils in years 7 & 8 will be opened in the Spring. It will provide attractive recreational space, common room areas, an ICT suite and delightful play areas. In the autumn the College will see the arrival of a new Headmaster, Mr James Murphy-O’Connor. Prior to his retirement, Headmaster, Dr Giles Mercer is leading the school’s transition, as it finalises a new timetable to incorporate school lessons into a 5 day week from September 2009. The move is intended to enhance the weekends for Boarding and Day pupils, with more time for personal study and activities. The College has carefully planned to ensure that those elements that make Prior Park a unique place will be protected, and indeed further enhanced. An attractive and enriching co-curricular programme will include sport, music, drama, the Combined Cadet Force and Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme. Flexi boarding will continue and weekly boarding will be available. Saturday sports fixtures and activities, with Mass on Sundays and weekend outings will continue and be further enhanced.
