My future husband has a property in Bradford on Avon and I had regularly walked past and admired the Carina Baverstock Couture shop window. On getting engaged recently, I booked an appointment. Having also lived in Bath and Wiltshire for the past few years, I wanted to support local businesses when planning my wedding. When booking the appointment I was asked a number of questions – When do you plan to get married? Have you tried any other dresses? What size are you? On the day of my appointment I received a message from Carina Baverstock Couture and returned their call. I was passed on to Carina Baverstock and was told that a member of staff was ill and that my appointment would need to be rearranged. As I was working and my mother was travelling to the appointment, I couldn’t rearrange for earlier in the day as offered. Carina Baverstock then asked me further questions - Where had I tried on dresses? Which designers had I tried on? Why had I travelled to other areas of the country to do this? How much did I intend to spend? Unprompted, she also offered me her opinions. This approach made me feel that I was not one their desired clients and this negative experience, before stepping into the shop, has changed my mind about rebooking my appointment. I am astounded that a shop that offers this poor customer experience has won The Wedding Industry Awards for two years running. Perhaps they are not aiming to win this award in 2015. I can see from other reviews that Carina Baverstock is passionate about her business and hope that she can take this constructive feedback in the way that it is intended. The pinnacle for most brides when organising their perfect day, is trying on wedding dresses. Most brides will try a range of styles and designers. Brides who book an appointment at your shop are likely to have looked at your website and know which designers you stock. Most women have read a magazine and already know the difference between manufactured and couture clothing. They will also have assessed whether they can afford the dresses, based on what you have stated on your website. Rather than inappropriately judging the bride’s spending power, perhaps you should focus on giving the bride a great experience that will make her recommend you to all her friends.

I had a very similar experience to the lady who wrote an earlier post. I found Carina to be extremely pushy and continued with a hard sales pitch throughout the "consultation". When I returned to try a particular dress (which I now will purchase in the Brides of Winchester- who also stock Stewart Parvin but are very nice!) my friend could not believe how rude she was. Also similarly we were sat down like little children and not allowed to browse. I had several dresses I wanted to try - but hey -that was not going to happen, instead I was put into dresses, including a fishtail which I had specifically said I did not want, but a clever sales ploy. I would look good in anything after been in a fishtail! She was also very noisy and continued to push me on what other shops I have visited and what designers I was looking at. She then made a comment that. the other dresses where in a different budget range. I am extremely lucky that my GP finance has given me a no-cap for my wedding dress- and she has lost a sale. I can laugh now but at the time it really the worst experience ever. I had travelled from Bournemouth - where she also commented that the girls down there "liked alot of Bling" so she probably wouldn't do business down there. I have 3 friends getting married next year- I will NOT be recommending here.!!

Brenda had her initial appointment with us where we tried several different designer dresses which encapsulated her style of elegant, pretty but understated. She had already tried on before be it a very different type of label to our luxury designers, Maggie Sotterio, is a factory produced label made in China, not the hand cut silk dresses made to order in England. When she came back for a second appointment which she chose to book she was then actually comparing Augusta Jones (again a low end pre-made factory dress) with a Royal Courturier, Stewart Parvin, who is without a doubt one of this countries premeire designers and is so recognized by being allowed to use the Royal stamp. I am sorry that Brenda did not enjoy her appointments with us, which came as such a surprize to us especailly as she booked the second one herself! She was given three hours of free advice and knowledgeable and experienced styling gained over many years in this profession to help her find the correct dress, which in fact turned out to be not her initial preference of something with more bling but an understated Stewart Parvin gown that took Brenda to another level. We know the lady in the Brides of Winchester shop who is very amiable and I am sure Brenda will be very happy there and I am delighted that she is still going to be wearing that Stewart Parvin gown that we found for her. Kind regards Carina and Lucy, Carina Baverstock Couture

My daughter Jenny wore her Jessica Charleston dress from your boutique last Saturday. To say it was a success would be the understatement of the year – her father wept openly when he first saw it and when she entered the church there was a satisfying collective gasp from the congregation, and rightly so – she looked just gorgeous and the dress, the veil and the headdress all contributed to the beautiful image. My thanks you and your staff – especially the marvellous Ellen – for your help, patience and excellent taste. The dress was expensive; it was worth every penny!

The dress blew absolutely everybody away – so many guests told me they had never seen such a beautiful dress and even now watching the wedding video, it is the first thing that people comment on! I could not have asked for a better bridal boutique and you made the whole experience unforgettable! I would not hesitate to send anybody your way in the future.

I just wanted to say a big thank you for all your help to find my beautiful dress. Your girls were fantastic and it was lovely to meet Suzanne Neville on your designer day who came up with some amazing ideas to make my dress unique to me to flatter my shape. We had the most incredible day and I felt so amazing revealing my dress to everyone. It was the perfect choice adding a touch of vintage chic to our special day and most importantly my husband was blown away by it! I really can’t thank you enough…I just wish I could wear it everyday! My JP (Jenny Packham) headpiece was gorgeous – I changed my accessories in the evening wore the matching belt and cuff (which my lovely ladies treated me to for my hen do) to add a bit of sparkle for the party!

Dear Carina, Just thought you might like to see a few photos of the wedding day! It all went wonderfully well despite less than ideal weather, not disastrous, but it would have been nice to drink the Pimms on the lawn and play croquet. Everyone really enjoyed themselves and loved the venue we had chosen, as well as the absolutely fabulous dress and I had loads of compliments on its style and simplicity. Congratulations on all the awards by the way, I heard about them when I came for a fitting. Kind regards, Sarah

I just wanted to say a huge thank you to you for helping me find and fit my perfect wedding dress. Our wedding day in New York was incredible and I felt like a million dollars in my dress and jacket. I am still getting compliments now three months later on my outfit, even from people who weren't even there and have just seen the pictures. Thanks very much!

As much as I hate to buck the trend with my feedback about this boutique, I feel strongly about putting my opinion forward. I got a poor impression from the first time I spoke to Lucy on the phone - an abrupt, unwelcoming tone which did little to enthuse me about my visit. As my mother was 10 mins early for our appointment, she asked if she could come in and wait - she was made to feel like this was an imposition. Later, the friend of another bride-to-be who was in the shop rang the doorbell – I pointed out to Carina that someone was at the door, she commented “yes, I’ve no idea why” before going to find out. We were sat down and given a drink as Carina talked to us so she could get a feel of me as a person. After this, she said that she had a few dresses in mind which would suit my personality-the first was about as far from my taste as possible. However, I kept an open mind and said that I would try the first 3, none of which appealed in colour, design or shape, so much for getting an idea of me as a person! After these, I started to say no and Carina suggested I come and have a look – up to this point I hadn’t been able to browse the dresses. Sadly, the majority of the dresses I tried either looked terrible on or were not appropriate for my shape - I'm stumped as to why a drop-waisted dress was selected for my curvy body, especially as I'd already said there was no point in me trying drop-waisted dresses. I did try on 2 beautiful dresses, one of which was the one I'd initially seen on the website - clearly showing that I know my style. The trying on of all dresses was accompanied by a hard sell which to be quite frank was transparent and often totally ridiculous comments were made - I was told that they'd be able to “get me into” a sample sale dress which they'd already struggled to partly do up. That may have been so but I didn't fancy sitting down on my wedding day and popping the buttons on my dress! It really felt like Carina cared more about a sale than finding me a perfect dress. The staff may appear to 'get to know you' but they certainly have their patter and stock phrases (“we don’t do bling” was heard from two members of staff even though I was shown a dress with a considerable bit of bling) and I honestly didn't feel like she GENUINELY tried to get to know me. All of us were amused by her calling me 'elegant' when I was wearing jumper, jeans and trainers - flattery will get you nowhere. I wasn't initially going to feed back but I have just found something out which confirmed my feelings about the ‘spiel’; throughout the appointment, Carina repeatedly put down the designer of a dress I'd seen at another boutique. I have since discovered that she stocks his occasion wear range and funnily enough, has some VERY flattering things to say about him! I cannot deny that the boutique stocks some very beautiful and unique wedding dresses. I also feel that perhaps I wasn't Carina's usual “country girl” (her words) but that should be of no consequence. I find it hard to believe people would be sucked in by the 'experience' offered and as much as I did love 2 of the dresses I'm afraid I would not have made a purchase because of the hard sell and the insincere approach. I am pleased to say that I have purchased a stunning dress from a different boutique where I was made to feel hugely welcome and able to get excited about such an important purchase because the staff made a genuine connection with me.

Reply from thebestof Bath:
This bride came to us to find her fourth wedding dress and ideally she wished to buy a dress from our sample sale. Sadly for her two of the samples she was particularly interested in had been sold, we therefore had to try to introduce her to other possibilities. During the hour and a half appointment it was established she wished to be quirky and different. She did find a favourite dress which was different enough to from her other wedding dresses but unfortuneatley this was not in the sale, however we offered to swap this dress with a similar one so that her chosen dress could be reduced by £1,000, which at the time she appeared to be very happy about. We are sad that this bride did not enjoy her experience but our intentions are genuine and the integrity of our business and indeed its reputation are extremely important to us, but on this occasion we are flabberghasted that she felt this way. Incidently in our opinion elegance is not what you wear but how you wear it, as proved by Coco Chanel in her pyjamas ! With regards Lucy and Carina

I found Carina Baverstock Couture absolutely amazing I have to say. I went around quite a few bridal shops and Carina Baverstock was the last one I went to actually, and it was just completely different in regards to the service they gave and they made me feel absolutely like royalty really. My mum and sister were there and they offered us a glass of wine. Their expertise came through because lots of other people didn’t bother asking about me as a person. They asked me how I would like to feel on the day and look on the day, and they asked about my fiancée which was nice because no one else did that, and got to know us as people, and think about the general look of the day which was really lovely. We spent a good 20-25 minutes talking about that which was great, and then they picked out dresses for me which I hadn’t experienced before either and everything I tried was something I was able to pull off, it wasn’t just what I’d normally take off the rail. They were very good at being honest about what cuts worked for me and which neck lines were good, it was really nice to have someone who know so much about it and have so much passion for it really, that was great. It was a whole different experience, and when I tried on THE dress I certainly knew about it! They’ve been really helpful – I’ve called back in to ask about shoes, they are very open to helping me out with whatever I need. The other thing I noticed as well is the layout of the shop, the detail they’d gone to for their interior décor is just really wonderful. You have the whole shop, they put a blind down the front door, you have space to walk around. Some places I’ve been to have either got so many dresses crammed on the rail you can’t see them, or you haven’t actually got space to move and try them on. And also at other places as well there’s either 2 clients or more, I’ve been to one in Bristol that had 7 people at a time which is just horrendous...(continued on next page)

(continued from previous page)...You do get that kind of personal treatment, you’re made to feel really special which is really really important because the idea is to only do this once! I liked their enthusiasm and excitement: I have to admit I’m quite a girly girl and I get really excited and they were getting really excited with us. My sister who got married last September was quite jealous of the experience because although she found a lovely dress she never really felt that she got the service that Carina and Lucy gave us on that day – she was really impressed. If I’m honest, people always said to me , oh you’ll know when you find the dress, you’ll feel it, I was getting to the point where I’d found some lovely dresses but I’d never had the experience that I’d had at Carina Baverstock Couture. Really really supportive, really lovely and really excited for me which was great.

Yes I would certainly recommend Carina Baverstock. I found the service very good, very accommodating, I liked the way Carina was honest, but also open to where I was coming from and what I was looking for, her shop is pretty and relaxing, makes you feel comfortable, and her staff are really nice. So yes I’ve been really pleased. She had a good selection of dresses to choose from. I visited quite a few other places and it was interesting how I was torn between two dresses that were at her shop. Both the dress and the service were important to me. I did have a bit of a wobble about which dress I was going to choose - I phoned her up one day and Carina was very kind enough to listen to me and give me a bit of moral support. That was really nice, I felt really comfortable going back there on my own and the seamstress just instilled a lot of confidence, very professional. They close the shop for new appointments and I found that quite nice because you feel exclusive and it is a difficult thing to go through and make your mind up about, so it’s nice to have privacy, I guess, and nice service right at the beginning.

I would very much recommend Carina Baverstock Couture. Initially the certain questions that Carina asked made me feel that she was very ‘onboard’ for what I was looking for, she knew what she was doing and made me feel very welcome. Carina gave quite good guidance tips so if you’re not sure what you’re looking for it would be helpful. I had a general idea but still it was just nice to have that extra advice. Carina was very complementary as well which always helps when you’re there to try on the dress! Personally, prior to visiting the shop I’d visited another 3 or 4 and the stock was much better quality than I’d seen previously so obviously it had me gripped! I was looking for something quite elegant and with a bit of a label on it I guess. Any of the dresses that I wanted to try on they had in my size which was a positive as well. Carina was very professional. Some of the places I’d visited can be a bit in your face and salesey but I didn’t sense any of that, just generally very professional and helpful. When you walk in it is a very, very nice place to get fitted for a gown - the interior is lovely. It was very personal service as well - when you’re in the process of purchasing the gown Carina was very good one on one. As I said, would highly recommend!
