It's dark.  it's raining.  You're alone.  Your car has broken down ...... what a nightmare!

There is an increasing number of people being injured on our roads because they are simply not prepared for a vehicle break-down.  It can be a horrible experience but if you are fully equipped it can be relatively easy and pain-free.

A few break-down basics include:

  • Get your vehicle off the road as soon as possible.
  • Warn other traffic with your hazard lights.
  • Get out of your vehicle and wait for help on a nearby verge or safe area.
  • Place a warning triangle on the road about 45 metres from your vehicle to warn approaching traffic.  These can be purchased in many shops or online.
  • Ring for help.  If you have break-down insurance cover call them as soon as you can.
  • Do not attempt repairs yourself, especially on the motorway.

In 2010 12% of all fatal accidents on the motorway hard shoulder happened after a break-down.  People simply do not use common sense.  Let's make sure this number does not increaes.

This could be avoided by regularly servicing your car and carrying out a few simple checks, especially before setting off on a long journey.  You are putting many lives at risk by breaking down, not just your own: think about any other passengers travelling with you, the people coming out to rescue you, and other road users.

Is it worth it?  Speak to K-Tech Automotive for advice and guidance.

Breaking down is an easily avoidable experience.  Just remember - be smart, be safe.
