It's Not All Hot Air!

Did you know that there are new MoT rules and regulations for airbags and tyre pressure monitors coming in from January 2012?

The government happily keeps this quiet unless you're in the business or the media latches on to it, so here are a few insights into what's happening.

First of all, airbags.  Airbags are a real pain to test.  Garages can't make them go off to give them a proper functional test because very often this will cause half of your dashboard to explode (who designed them this way?).

It's very easy to damage airbags when checking the various component parts, so please, please make sure you go to a reliable, trusted garage for your next MoT.  You need it to be carried out by someone who really understands what's going on under the dashboard - without inadvertently exploding your airbag!

Trailers and towing equipment are also part of the MoT these days.  Makes sense; there is nothing worse than following a trailer tent or caravan with faulty or no lights, dodgy indicators, andf the wrong number plate.  Interestingly, I could only find out the details about this from the Caravan and Camping Association.  Lucky they're on the case.

Finally, from January next year all new vehicles must have pressure-based tyre sensors in place.  MoT centres will need to carry out a visual inspection of the air pressure monitoring systems to make sure the sensors are working.  If you're buying a new car next year it's something to be aware of.

Good idea as too high or too low air pressure in tyres is extremely dangerous, as well as impacting on fuel consumption and our environment.
