Ate at the Mill on Saturday night. We had booked the table a few days before and we were lucky to have had the forethought as the restaurant was completely full. The Mill is a converted and ancient corn mill that has had a contemporary twist and yet kept its historical integrity. The restaurant area is upstairs in the actual milling area (above the water wheel). All in all it's a beautiful place and immaculately looked after. We arrived (4 of us) to be greeted by an extremely polite young lady who showed us to our table and offered us drinks and nibbles. We each had two courses, wine and after dinner coffee (no room for dessert) and the food was exceptional. The menu makes a real point of telling you the source of all their food, Ulverston butcher with his own sheep etc etc. Most of the food we tried was directly from Cumbria and it's nice to support local farmers. I noticed the music was old fashioned jazz but a tad too quiet, one very small detail that wasn't perfect. The presentation of the food has had a lot of thought and each dish looked very pretty. There's a choice of "pub classic" food or the more upmarket "Choice" selection, something for the casual or more formal diner. Nice touch and I've not seen that before in a restaurant. Having eaten at virtually every pub and restaurant within a 10-12 mile radius of Dalton, I can firmly say that the Mill is up there with the very best. Constency will be critical and I'll visit again before Christmas to check. TRIPBOD RECOMMENDATION A.BENNISION, DALTON IN FURNESS

I believe the Mill is owned by the same company that runs the Duke of Edinburgh Hotel in Barrow. I stayed for two nights and ate at the Mill on my second night. It was extremely impressive. My colleagues and I stayed for three hours in total, enjoyed a really excellent meal with cheese/biscuits to finish. The level of cooking was superb using local meats and produce to create very attractive yet tasty food. Presentation was unusually good. My saddle of venison was expertly cooked and as rare as I requested. The wine menu was not inexhaustive but the quality was fine. Our party tried three bottles, all but one were first class. I've tried a number of local restaurants in this area over the years and generally been unimpressed... The Mill stands head and shoulders above anything else locally. FROM TRIPBOD - W.BOOKER
