Carpet Types

Most carpets manufactured today are tufted carpets, these come in a variety of textures and styles to give different effects and properties and include:

Loop Pile Carpets:

• Berber - made from thick or bulky yarns giving a cushioned effect underfoot.
• Level Loop - All the loops are the same height giving a natural, casual appearance.
• Multi Level Loop - Two or three loop heights creating informal, random textures. Very forgiving for marks and stains.

Cut Pile Carpets:

• Frieze - Dense, low profile surface creating a coarse, pebbly texture. Durable and suitable for heavy tread areas.
• Saxony - The yarn tips remain distinct forming an elegant finish. Suitable for less heavy wear areas.
• Twist - this is the cut-pile standard, the most popular with a versatile, textured finish ideal for plain colours.
• Velvet - Little twist in the yarn causes the ends to blend together. A luxury for occasional rooms as foot prints show easily.

Woven carpets are less popular today because of the cost of manufacture. Some of the finest carpets which are used for prestigious installations are woven and include:

• Axminster - A velvety surface, highly durable and a luxurious feel. The manufacturing process enables intricate colours and designs to be used.with a range of cut and loop textured effects available.
• Wilton - Similar to Axminsters, extremely durable.
• Flat Weave - A loop pile, creating a flatter more textured effect than a Wilton.

Choosing the right Carpet Underlay

With the right underlay the life of a carpet can be extended significantly, the carpet will look better, will be more comfortable to walk on and there will be increased sound insulation.

There are many types of carpet underlays:

• Sponge Rubber - the most popular as it performs well for comfort and has durable spring retention
• PU Foam - Excellent comfort with lots of thickness options. Light weight and can be re-cycled again after use.
• Crumb Rubber - Flat and dense, ideal for heavy footfall areas.
• Combination - A rubber crumb base with felt top layer offering a good combination of protection, durability and comfort.
• Felt - the traditional underlay made from recycled fibres, wool, jute and synthetic. Excellent thermal properties and still popular with contractors when stretch fitting woven carpets.
