Here's a few simple things that you can do to be more environmentally friendly and save you money in the long run:
1. Turn off appliances such as TV’s and DVDs at the power switch and don't leave laptops on charge overnight. Amazingly, standby mode accounts for about 18% of electricity consumed.
2. Install at least 3 energy saving bulbs. They last 12x longer and save £9 on the annual electricity bill. The more you change the more you save.
3. When making a hot drink only fill the kettle with as much water as you need.
4. Turn down the thermostat by 1% - this can cut your heating bill by 10%
5. Wash your laundry at 30 degrees - you use 40% less electricity
6. Insulate your loft with a thick layer of insulation - remember heat rises so you may be paying to heat the roof space.
7. Insulate the walls of your house
8. Replace your boiler if more than 15 years old - these are likely to be inefficient and could save 1/3 on energy bills)
9. Get each individual radiator fitted with a thermostat so that you can control the heat needed in each room.
10. Buy Energy Saving 'A' appliances
11. Give the car a break whenever possible, why not walk for a change, it will also do you good.
12. Recycle as much of your daily waste as possible.
13. Do you get cold spots on your radiators or are they slow to heat up – you may have a sludge problem which power flushing could resolve.
