On Sunday 15th August Barnsley Rotary Club held a Garden Party at the home of Mr & Mrs Tony Hellewell’s in aid of International Causes that the Club has earmarked to be supported this year.

The day was supported by approximately 130 people, including the Rotary District. Governor Len Taylor and his wife, who helped to raise the brilliant sum of £2,300 by way of raffles, a quiz and an auction of tickets for a Yorkshire County Cricket Club County Championship Match donated by Liverpool Victoria Insurance Company. The four tickets were eventually won after a hard battle by a very young cricket fan, Max Burgin.

The weather was extremely kind, being the hottest and driest day of the week, several mild cases of sunburn were reported but nothing life threatening. The magnificent garden was the perfect backdrop for the event and many people passed admiring comments about it. There was entertainment from a very unusual band that played ’Salsa’ music during the afternoon.

Barnsley Rotary Club have supported various International causes such as the Eye Camp and Cataract work that our own Rotarian Anil Mandel has worked on for many years performing operations to the poor of India. Barnsley Rotary Club has supported the remarkable Life Straws that actually enable people to extract drinkable water literally from a muddy puddle! Shelter Boxes that provide, as the name implies, a shelter to live in, cooking utensils, sleeping bags, etc. for a family in disaster areas such as Haiti and Pakistan.
