Looking in Wonderland - artsdepot
John Tenniel worked as a political cartoonist for Punch magazine, until in 1864 he was approached by Charles Lutwidge Dodgson to illustrate a small book of fantasy for children...
Dodgson was better known as Lewis Carroll, and that book was Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.
Looking in Wonderland showcases Tenniel's world famous illustrations from Lewis Carroll's two Alice books - Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1865) and Through the Looking-Glass and What Alice Found There (1872).
The exhibition is a selection of illustrations from both books in which the creative genius of both Carroll and Tenniel is shown at its best.
The original drawings were made on wooden blocks and then engraved by commercial engravers in London and the prints on show in this exhibition are perfect examples of the skill of both illustrator and engraver.
