Altrincham bucks national sales and footfall trend
Business is on the up in Altrincham, with a rise in people visiting the town and spending more money despite the national economic challenges.
The town has also seen an increase in new business, primarily smaller independent and specialist shops, plus cafes and eateries.
Executive Councillor Mike Cornes said: “Altrincham is bucking the national trend by continuing to thrive and grow in the face of these tough economic times.
The Council has remained committed to its town centres, and measures such as the introduction of a 10p parking charge in our car parks and on-street spaces has no doubt had an impact on encouraging people to visit.
What is happening in Altrincham is proof that businesses can continue to grow in these difficult times and I would ask local people to continue to shop local in a bid to support Trafford’s town centres.”
Altrincham’s upward trend in sales, reported by leading retailers in the town’s main shopping area, is based on the latest annual trading figures to May 2011.
Research suggests that reasons for this growth include some retailers maximising the online shopping trend by offering shoppers a service where they can buy online and collect instore within 24 hours. The town is also benefiting from its location close to a large number of secondary and primary schools.
In terms of footfall, more people are visiting Altrincham and car park figures are up.
The introduction of a 10p parking charge in Trafford’s car parks and on-street spaces has encouraged shoppers as well as assisting businesses, while the town centre’s location close to residential housing, as well as the increasing cost of petrol, may account for why residents choose to support and use the local town rather than going further afield.
