Last Post Exhibition
Starts at 10.00am Friday 18 Sep 2009 to Tuesday 27 Oct 2009
During the First World War the Post Office contributed to military operations on a scale never seen before, providing a vital means of communication between the fighting fronts and the home front.
Over 75,000 post office workers left their jobs to fight in the war, with 12,000 joining the Post Office s own battalion The Post Office Rifles.
As the men left to fight, tens of thousands of women joined the workforce temporarily and for the first time women were allowed to perform duties such as sorting mail and delivering post in urban areas.
This exhibition, produced by The British Postal Museum & Archive (BPMA) in partnership with the Churchill Museum and Cabinet War Rooms includes images and facsimiles, and tells the stories of postal workers at war and on the Home Front - examining the vital role played by postal communications.
