Extra power to traffic wardens

Aldershot and Farnborough will see MORE traffic wardens with extra powers to issue on-the-spot fines for littering.

Rushmoor Borough Council is giving its community patrol officers (CPOs) powers to issue parking fines, while existing parking attendants will be allowed to issue fines for littering.

This follows a criticism that Community patrol officers are not good value for money. A council report showed that the officers had issued only eight on-the-spot fines in four months and had cost taxpayers £300,000 a year.

David Quirk, the council’s head of community and environment, said “At the moment when the CPOs are out and about and see a car parked in a taxi rank, there’s nothing they can do about it. Under these plans, they could issue fines and the same goes for a parking attendant who see litter being dropped.”

I like the part about littering – it's one of my pet hates. I would love them to catch the people that throw rubbish out of their car windows.
