Children's doctor quits hospital over cuts – Could your family be affected?

With elections coming up, not one of the political parties can promise that there won't be cuts to the National Heath Service. So as the Royal Surrey Hospital is planning to cut its Child Psychology services now, what next?

It's not just patients in Surrey that will be affected, The Royal Surrey also serves families from Aldershot and its surrounding areas.

Paediatric Consultant at the Royal Surrey, Dr Nic Driver, feels so strongly about the issue that he has quit in protest, angered by a review that will see the service stripped back by 50% and having a severe affect on vulnerable patients.

I felt desperately sad when Dr Driver explained his reasons for his resignation to me. Selfishly, mostly for personal reasons. Over the past year, following my 14 year old son's diagnosis of Epilepsy, his expertise, kindness, patience and support have been second to none.

The paediatric unit, whose services have been so important to us, will loose a brilliant consultant and the therapy that has been offered to my son following the trauma that he has been through, may no longer be available.

I have learnt to trust the treatment that Doctor Driver prescribes for my son's brain. If we as parents put that much trust in him, surely Nick Moberly, chief executive at The Royal Surrey, should be trusting his judgement too. Our children are after all our future.

After a meeting with parents, bosses have now decided to keep the child psychology services and Doctor Driver has apparently withdrawn his resignation. So it does pay to stand up for what you believe in. report abuse...
