Many Hampshire-based businesses joined several Aldershot Town players in 14 teams competing for prizes in “Beat The Pro”, “Nearest the Pin” and “Hole in One” challenges. Participating businesses in the 18-hole competition included Holiday Inn, Southern Electric, Worldwide Carpets, Intech Telecom and Hi-Speed Couriers, alongside Shots stars Glen Little, Jamie Young, Ben Herd and Assistant Manager Gary Owers.
Mick Fisher, Special Projects Director at Xfor and also winner of the day’s least auspicious prize, for “Worst Golfer”, said: “It was a great day and a very worthy cause, but I don’t believe I will be troubling the Captain of the next European Ryder Cup team for a wild card entry”.
Mike Buss, endurance athlete, personal trainer and holder of 40 world records in aid of military support charities such as Help For Heroes, was the day’s guest speaker. A former Army Physical Training Instructor with 10 years’ service in the Armed Forces, Buss has since devoted his life to raising money for charity through acts of incredible physical endurance.
The golf was followed by a raffle and auction, with all prizes donated by local businesses, including a Red Devil Skydive, a Mercedes SLK driving weekend, a signed Chelsea football shirt and a weekend stay at the Farnborough Holiday Inn.
All funds raised will help to promote and protect the health of those who have been wounded whilst serving in the Armed Forces.
Future charity events organised by Aldershot Town include, on Friday 26 November, a Sportsman’s Dinner at Farnborough’s Holiday Inn with two football legends, former Liverpool midfielder Jimmy Case and Scottish international striker David Speedie.
