The workmen were out bright and early on Sunday, a day early, to start Preston Road resurfacing works.

They took some neighbours by surprise as the County Council must have decided to extend the resurfacing work to the junction with Lambrick Way. A few cars which were parked on Preston Road had to be moved with haste.

With the beefy machinery in place and good weather it didn’t take long to remove the old tarmac down to the hard-core of the road.

    14041414

Then it was on with the new tarmac and by mid afternoon the stretch from Lambrick Way to Kensington Close was done.

his Sunday, the annual Abingdon Spring Cycle Festival took place in Abingdon.

    14041324

Group rides took place all morning from 4.5 mile rides, designed to get families riding together, and organised by Freewheeling and Pedal Power, through 10 and 20 mile road rides, 15 and 25 mile off road rides,  organised by Freewheeling,

    14041301

and the 40 mile rides organised by OTCC (Outdoor Traders Cycle Club).

    14041329

As well as cycling stalls, there was food, music, tombolas, massage and first aid.

    14041331

People were encouraged to bring and show off their more unusual cycle based transportation.

    14041335

The Abingdon Carbon Cutters were generating electricity from a bike to make smoothies. If only we could get all those static machines in gyms doing something useful!!!

    14041302

Enthusiasts were also queuing to have a go on the Tri-Power Spinning Challenge – a four minute static time trail.

    14041333

Against Breast Cancer have their own sponsored cycle event on May 18th from Swindon – the Great Western Ride, and were there to get people signed up for that.

As with every year that I remember the Spring Cycle Festival got lucky and had a beautiful sunny spring day, and it encouraged people to have a go and enjoy cycling. More pictures on Abingdon Blog Facebook.

    14041201

There has been a pile of sandbags outside the Abingdon Water Treatment Works for some time. The bags were used in the winter floods. There is no report of there being anything like the dangers of flooding at Abingdon’s water treatment works as experienced elsewhere.

    14041202

The Abingdon Water Treatment works had a recent upgrade in 2012 at a cost of £3m.

    14041203

The Borough Records show that the Thames Conservancy started writing to Abingdon Corporation back in about 1867 requesting them to initiate measures to stop the flow of sewage into the River Thames at Abingdon Bridge and St Helen’s Church. They wrote again in 1869 asking what action was being taken. By 1873 the conservatory were threatening Abingdon with legal action to force compliance.

The Town Clerk, wrote back to explain that a Committee had been looking at the issue, and had visited various sewage treatment schemes nationally.

But in 1875 Abingdon Corporation decided to do take action sooner rather than later. The Corporation borrowed about £19K from the Public Works Loan Commission, purchased land from a farmer in Sutton Wick, and created the Sewage Farm, that has through numerous upgrades become the concrete clad chambers and towers that are there today. I guess that a Sewage Farm involved allowing sewage to settle over larger areas of land.
