As the August bank holiday approaches and you are running out of things to do with the family, we have collated a selection of activities which are going on around Abingdon and Southern Oxfordshire. There is something for everyone and plenty to choose from.

Abingdon Rowing Club Open Morning

Saturday 23rd August 10am-1pm

Come along to Abingdon Rowing Club for their Open Morning. Tour the brand new gym, attend a demonstration and have a go on a rowing machine, and participate in a “taster” on the water in a rowing boat with experienced rowers.

Active and competitive adults should wear gym kit, bring a positive outlook and be prepared to have fun!

Shrivenham Village Fete, Memorial Hall, Shrivenham - Faringdon

Saturday 23rd August 2014 1pm

Come along to one of Waitrose Magazine's 'Top 10 Fetes in the Country'. Come in animal fancy dress to see  craft and charity stalls, a funfair, children's entertainer, races, Punch & Judy, Highworth Silver band, live music, church tower tours, village circular walk, fun dog show, pony rides and food court. There is also a car boot sale and tug of war tournament. The fete officially starts at 13.00 but buying bargains at the car boot starts earlier.

Uffington White Horse Show – Uffington

Sunday 24th & Monday 25th August 9am – 5pm 

A traditional two day country show with a wide range of attractions for everyone including stunt riders, sky divers and a festival circus. Choose from a programme of events in the arena, craft stalls, food hall, animals, historic vehicles and much more. The show is located in the fields below the Uffington White Horse.  

Stanton St John Summer Festival, Stanton St John - Oxford

Sunday 24th August 2014 to Monday 25th August 2014 1pm-6pm

Come along and celebrate 100 years of village life. There is something for everyone including history lovers,  culture vultures, garden enthusiasts, foodies and lots for children.  

Weekend of Steam, Cholsey & Wallingford Railway - Wallingford

Sunday 24th August 2014 – Monday 25th August 2014  

Join the railway for a first - two steam engines offering a Weekend of Steam.

Ewelme Village Show, Recreation Ground – Ewelme OX10 6PG

Monday 25th August 2014 1.30pm  

Visit the show tent for a display of be many prize winning exhibits of fruit, vegetables, flowers, floral arrangements, cookery and home crafts.  There will be homemade teas, a Pimms tent,  and many other stalls and attractions including a children’s entertainer, children's craft tent, classic cars, raffle, traditional skittles and brass band. 

Open Gardens & Flower Festival, South Stoke - Wallingford

Monday 25th August 2014 1.30pm 

Visit the pretty Thames side village and enjoy a variety of village open gardens. Include in your visit the flower festival within St Andrew’s church, and the delicious WI tea and cakes in the village hall, or alternatively a pint and tasty lunch in the Perch and Pike pub. There’s free parking on the recreation ground, where you will find the community village shop selling plants, ice creams etc and the children’s play area. For more details call 07796 384472.  

Long Wittenham Village Fete, Plough Inn, Long Wittenham - Abingdon on Thames
Monday 25th August 2014 2pm

In aid of St Mary's Church. There will be games, music, refreshments and fun for everyone in the riverside gardens of the Plough Inn.  Bring along your dog and take part in the dog agility show, and this year there's a twist as owners are allowed a chance to show their skills too!  Tel: 01865 407605.

Didcot Urban Race - Didcot
Monday 25th August 2014 10am

Join this exciting orienteering event organised by Thames Valley Orienteering Club, and is ideal for all ages and abilities - families, children and runners too. There will be several courses to choose from, ranging from 1km for children in a traffic free area, up to 7km for runners. Registration and parking will be at Didcot Town FC, Bowmont Water, OX11 7AF. Come along on the day between 10.00 and 12.00 to get started.
