Just a few minutes' drive from Abergavenny you'll find the multi-award-winning public house, bar and inn, The Clytha Arms.
The Canning family are dab hands at running a pub. They've had charge of The Clytha Arms - 6 miles from Abergavenny on the old Raglan Road - since 1992, and over the years have picked up lots of awards. This year the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) has awarded them Gwent Country pub of the year for the sixth time. This surely reflects the care which Andrew and Beverley put into selecting and keeping their beers. In the public bar The Clytha Arms offers six real ales and a range of tasty, reasonably priced snacks. Their list of tapas includes specialities such as Three welsh cheeses with welsh honey and bara brith alongside more usual fare given a slightly unusual twist, like Calamari in beer batter with aioli. The pub is a converted Dower House surrounded by lawns and gardens, just a short car journey or pleasant cycle ride from Abergavenny. Sit outside on a sunny day or snuggle up in the indoor bar areas when it's cooler. There are bar games available including old-fashioned tabletop bar skittles. The atmosphere is that of an old inn combined with up-to-the-minute friendliness and good service.Every public house, bar and inn has a wide range of drinks on sale, but few offer the festivals of which this one is justly proud. The Welsh Cider and Perry Society hold their premier event of the year at The Clytha Arms. Over the late May Bank Holiday weekend, several hundred enthusiasts from Abergavenny and beyond pitch their tents in the picturesque grounds and enjoy a weekend of tasting champion brews.Campers will be back in Clytha over the August Bank Holiday weekend for the annual Welsh Beer, Cheese and Music Festival. If camping is not your thing, the inn has its own accommodation available. There are four en suite double rooms, including a Japanese-style room in cool blues, and a full Welsh breakfast is included. The pub also has a private room available for small conferences, with video facilities and, of course, refreshments on tap.If you want to book the conference room, stay at The Clytha Arms or camp at one of their festivals you'd need to book ahead by calling them on 01873 840306 and or e-mailing via their website www.clytha-arms.com. But for a drink and snack of course you just turn up during licensing hours. When you contact The Clytha Arms be sure to mention that you found them on Thebestof Abergavenny.
