Who’ll be your Valentine, Abergavenny?

It’s that time of year when shop windows turn pink and fluffy, because it’s Valentine’s Day on the 14th.   Watch out, gents, because this year is also a Leap Year. But let's be fair, there’s nothing new about ladies taking the initiative in affairs of the heart.

Back in the 1700s gloves were a traditional Valentine gift for women, and it was the custom for women to approach men and ask for gloves!  This is particularly appropriate in Abergavenny, where past industries have included  tanning and its various spin-offs, including glove-making.

Another custom back in those times was that unmarried women would pin bay leaves to their pillows on the eve of Valentine’s Day, in the hope of seeing their future husbands in their dreams. Nowadays you’re more likely to be given an internet chat pillow, a pink wii remote or “Tweet Me” lovehearts!

For the old-fashioned romantics among us, nothing beats chocolates and flowers. Treat your true love to some deliciousness from Black Mountain Gold Chocolate, based in Crickhowell. If you can’t get along there in person, shop on-line at www.blackmountainchocolate.co.uk, or if you'd prefer to produce your own range, book your place on a chocolate making workshop.

Next, order a bunch of gorgeous red roses from Hilary’s Four Seasons Florists, at 22 Cross Street in Abergavenny.  They do have other colours and flower species, of course, but red roses seem to be the right choice this week.

Then (I'm talking to the gentlemen again, obviously) surprise your loved one by cooking them a delicious dinner.  Local artist Judy Adamson, whose Valentine cards are available at The Trading Post café on Nevill Street, Abergavenny, has a recipe for a Valentine’s feast on her website www.judyadamsonartanddesign.blogspot.com.

Or you could treat yourselves to a superb night out somewhere special, like The Hardwick http://www.thebestof.co.uk/local/abergavenny/business-guide/feature/the-hardwick/36566 .

Whatever you do, you should be able to find all you need for your celebration right here in Abergavenny. Have a lovely romantic evening!
