The start of the new term for us “mature students” is not just about book learning. There are lots of practical classes to join, and many great opportunities to combine learning with fun.
Maybe, inspired by “Strictly” on the TV, you’re looking for a dance class? If so, you’ll be delighted to hear that this Saturday sees the opening of what promises to be a fantastic new dance centre in Abergavenny.
The community organisation Dance Blast is now based in what used to be the gym behind the Melville Theatre in Pen-y-Pound, and the space has been transformed into a fabulous studio, ready to welcome dancers of all ages.
At the opening this weekend, the brilliant Youth Company of Dance Blast (MYDC) will be performing, there’ll be a jazz trio playing, wine to drink AND a salsa class for everyone who wants to have a go. That includes people like me who are not born dancers, to put it mildly.
So if you'd like to come along and see what's on offer, and maybe have a go at tripping the light fantastic, give Sally Carlson a ring on 01873 855544 or just turn up between 5 and 8pm on Saturday for a preview of what’s on offer. Sally and the team have a well-established programme for kids, but are keen to know what kind of dance classes adults would like them to put on. Whether you're fan of salsa, mambo, ballroom or jazz, they'll try and meet your needs, so go along and have a chat –and a dance!
And if, after that, you find you've really got the music in you and you fancy a bit more dancing on Sunday, drop in to the market hall in Abergavenny, where Martha and Dave Holman are holding their annual World Trade Fair from 10am. There’ll also be drumming, singing and all sorts of Fairtrade goodies on sale, as well as delicious Zimbabwean food.
So, don’t be shy, put on those dancing shoes and get moving this weekend!
