Thinking about Christmas fare in Abergavenny

I had my Christmas turkey today – in some sandwiches from a well-known supermarket eaten outdoors with my walking friends. Now I’ll begin to think of what to cook for Christmas lunch.

If, like me, you fancy something other than turkey on The Day, what better place for inspiration than the Abergavenny Christmas Food and Drink Fair. It’s this Sunday, 11th December, with 70 stalls, street entertainment and chef demonstrations.

Drop into Abergavenny Borough Theatre between 10 and 5 on Saturday to pick up tickets for this year's Christmas spin-off from the Abergavenny Food Festival or call 01873 850805. If last year’s event is anything to go by, it’ll be a fun day.

I’ve got my eye on a masterclass from Freddy Bird and Charlie Hicks about Moorish and southern Mediterranean-inspired festive dishes. Think Turkey, not turkey – get it?!

And I see that Stephen Terry from award-winning local gastro restaurant The Hardwick is offering tips on cooking up a tasty Boxing Day brunch.  He's the man who knows!

It's a great opportunity for finding some inspirational ideas for Christmas, and some gifts that you won't find anywhere else.  And if it's a crisp dry day, it will definitely get you into the spirit of the season.

When it comes to stocking up on fruit and vegetables for Christmas, what better place is there than our Abergavenny Markets for local fresh produce. The monthly Farmers’ Market is a week earlier than usual, on Thursday 15th.

And down on the Friends of the Earth tea and coffee stall there’ll be mulled wine too, as well as mince pies by Mark Coulton of lovely local company Sugar Loaf Catering.  Look out for the people in the orange elf hats on the stall – I’ll be one of them!
