This weekend you can go back in time amid the picturesque ruins of Raglan Castle, just 9 miles away from Abergavenny.
The Knights of Longshank, a re-enactment society, will be there from 10am to 5pm on both Saturday and Sunday, to give you a taste of medieval life but without the painful bits. There will be jesters, archers and jugglers demonstrating their skills at the castle, providing fun for all the family.
Perhaps they’ll have chain mail for the kids to try on – it’ll be quite an eye-opener for them to discover how heavy it is! All in all, it will definitely be a fun-packed occasion.
Next Wednesday there’s the opportunity to go back to Raglan Castle, this time for some Shakespeare – the Caerleon Festival Players will be presenting The Taming of the Shrew. My advice is: take a picnic!
I remember attending the equivalent show last year; watching wonderful theatre outdoors, with a glass of wine in my hand and the golden glow of the sunset behind the remains of the castle's Great Tower, was quite something.
And if you’re keen to see more Shakespeare, there’s Twelfth Night in the remarkable setting of Blaenavon Ironworks at 1pm and 7pm this Saturday and Sunday. The 'Taking Flight' theatre company from Cardiff, who are staging the production, aims to break down barriers by using a cast of disabled and non-disabled professional actors.
So we’ve got a culture-filled week ahead. A bit of sunshine would make it perfect....
