It’s ironic that when I was a child we called our radio the 'wireless', even though it always had to be firmly plugged in! In these days of digital profusion we hardly use the word in that context, and I know nostalgia is dated, but it’s a context I like to remember. And listening to the 'wireless' is a great thing to do on a cold winter’s day.
What’s more, there are things you can do at the same that you can’t do too well while watching the TV. Making marmalade, for example. Now’s the time to buy your marmalade oranges from Abergavenny market and get a good fug up in the kitchen as you stir and pour! Of course, you may prefer marrow and ginger jam, tomato chutney, red onion pickle.... No matter - the stall holders in Abergavenny market can fill your basket with all you need.
I, for one, can’t do my knitting or sewing while looking up, but I can listen to a play on the radio at the same time, and find I concentrate on it all the better while I’m doing something with my hands, whatever I'm making.
So get you down to The Wool Croft for some colourful yarn or to Jaybee Soft Furnishings for some material to sew up into some smart new curtains. They have an amazing selection of fabrics and trimmings so give them a call on 01873 855605 or pop into the shop in at the bottom of Frogmore Street and get inspired!
