So, the last week of the school summer holiday has come round again - where does the summer go??! - and the forecast promises a week of sunny dry weather.

How will you make the most of your leisure during these last few precious days? Abergavenny has so much to offer and a lot of it is free.  Why not spend some of your spare time having a walk along the Monmouthshire and Brecon canal, a joy at any time of year but especially when the sun is shining on the tow path.  There's acres of space all along the banks of the River Usk for playing frisbee with the dog and kids, and ideal for picnic stops to watch the swans gliding elegantly in the shallows.

The paths that criss cross the gentle slopes of the Sugar Loaf mountain are splendid for enjoying the fresh air on foot, by bicycle or on horseback, and if you want something a little more challenging there's the Blorenge on the other side of the valley, with its punishing climb that's worthwhile tackling in order to to enjoy the superb views from the top.

The markets are held on Tuesday, Friday and Saturday and a huge car boot sale takes place at Govilon on Thursday morning.

So without having to spend very much it's possible to enjoy the last few lovely days of the holiday within a couple of miles of Abergavenny town. Why go anywhere else?!
