As the snow starts to recede

Well, it has been a hectic few weeks for us all.  The main roads are clear today - for now, at least - and it's just the side streets and outlying areas that are still waiting for the thaw to kick in.

The local authority gritting teams have come under attack but they have in fact been working round the clock on most days over the holiday period and afterwards to keep the main roads and essential routes ploughed and gritted as far as possible.

It is acknowledged that some areas have not had the services they need and that grit is now in short supply but hopefully with the temporary let up in temperatures the worst of the snow will now start to clear.

The snow looks pretty when it first falls but the recent icy winds have turned many places into no-go areas, especially on sloping surfaces and where the snow has been compacted by traffic.  If you are not confident about getting out and about safely and you are in need of food, medicines or other essential supplies, phone someone.  Anyone.  Swallow any pride you may have about this and ask for assistance.  Don't risk injury until you have made a few calls to try and find help.

Communities and social groups have been pulling together in a marvellous fashion that is reminiscent of the atmosphere during the war.  There is help out there, you just need to ask for it.  Even neighbours you don't know very well are sure to want to be supportive if they can - so why not try them?

If all other avenues fail, call the One Stop Shop in Cross Street for advice on 01873 735800.  Take care out there.
