Helping you to be a safer driver or rider and a responsible road user.
When did you last have your driving skills analysed?
Would you pass the driving test now?
Would you like to be a better, safer, driver or rider?
Aberdeen Advanced Motorists (AAM) is affiliated to The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) established in 1956 as a Charity to raise driving and riding standards and save lives on our roads.
Most road accidents are caused by bad driving - not the road, vehicle or the conditions.
Key advantages of joining
By learning better driving skills you will be safer for yourself, your passengers and for other road users.
Over 70% of drivers who received Advanced Driver coaching showed significantly safer skills.
Advance drivers enjoy lower motor insurance costs.
Smoother driving uses less fuel and saves wear and tear on tyres and other mechanical components.
How do you become a member of the AAM?
By taking the IAM's 'Skill for Life' programme. This is run by local volunteers who will guide you through the steps leading to the test. We run two Advanced Driving courses in the year, one in the spring and the other in the autumn.
The courses consist of three lecture evenings followed by observed runs with a Group Observer who will provide on-the-road guidance in order to bring your driving up to test standard.
The test is carried out by an independent examiner, appointed by the IAM, all of whom are current or retired Police Driving Instructors.
How much does it cost?
Your initial assessment, course fees and test, together with your first year's associate membership cost £139. This includes the IAM manual, an initial driving assessment, test preparation, entry to the Advanced Driving Test and when passed, full membership of the Institute.
What does the test include?
You'll drive/ride for about 90 minutes on all types of road, accompanied by an IAM appointed examiner. If you reach the required standard you will receive your IAM certificate and become an advanced driver.
Is there an age limit?
No. If you have held a full UK driving licence for three months or more, you can prepare for the Advanced Driving Test. You are never too old, or too young, to become a safer, smoother driver or rider.
