A postwar Chicago blues scene without the magnificent contributions of Muddy Waters is absolutely unimaginable.
From the late '40s on, he eloquently defined the city's aggressive, swaggering, Delta-rooted sound with his declamatory vocals and piercing slide guitar attack.
His bands also featured what would become a who's who of electric blues. Tonight, on their only UK appearance, six former members of the band, most in their 70’s and 80’s, give us the original sound: Jerry Portnoy (harp – and often a regular with Eric Clapton), Steady Rollin Bob Margolin (guitar), David Maxwell (piano), Calvin “Fuzz” Jones (bass) and Willie “Big Eyes” Smith (drums) are joined, for one night only, by the 83 year old, legendary, super-harmicona player James Cotton, also a former Muddy Waters band star.
