Durham's Independent School for Girls

Here at Durham High School we provide a lively, friendly and caring community for girls throughout their education from age 3 to 18. Durham High School is an Independent Church of England foundation dating back to 1884. Education is based firmly on Christian principles where every individual counts and our belief is that each girl will find the spiritual and moral resources she needs to cope with the demands of life in the 21st century.

Durham High School was one of the first schools in the Durham to take girls' education seriously and we are proud to continue that tradition today; we seek to develop the potential of every girl in all areas of life. Our aim as an Independent School is to encourage academic excellence and a lifelong love of learning, but we also place great value on personal development in creative arts, in sport, in community service and in leadership.  An education for life.

Durham High School provides education for all age groups split into four stages:

Rainbow Nursery

One of the best equipped independent nursery schools in Durham.

Junior House

Provides girls with a stimulating, caring environment for their education.

Senior House

Girls in Senior House join us from a wide range of maintained and independent schools; a genuine cross section of Durham. We encourage our girls to approach their education with enthusiasm and commitment.

Sixth Form

Our Sixth Form girls begin to see life from a different perspective and enjoy special privileges such as not wearing uniform and having a base in a purpose built block with their own common room. The Sixth Form benefit hugely from the use of our superb ICT and library facilities in the Hurworth Building as they develop their skills in independent learning.

Durham High School for Girls
9th July 2007
My daughter is in year 5 at DHS and started in the nursery. I have always found it a very happy school. In nursery my daughter was taught through play and she seemed to learn things very quickly as she was enjoying herself. After several years at DHS I am now finding that she is turning into a well behaved, well mannered and confident young lady. I would recommend DHS to any parent who has a daughter as I find that it is a very kind and caring school offering a wide variety of opportunities to girls.
Truly Exceptional
