SICK and injured children who go to Colchester’s NHS Walk-in Centre and minor injury units in Harwich and Clacton could be in for a big surprise – hordes of teddy bears will be there to greet them!
Big-hearted members of Clacton Freemasons have donated hundreds of the colourful soft toys to help youngsters cope with their pain or discomfort. The deal was struck after walk-in centre nurse Heather Lewarn approached the Freemasons.
“They were more than happy to help,” said Heather. “Within a matter of days we had boxes of teddy bears delivered to us. “It really is a big help in comforting young children who come in either sick or injured and maybe upset and crying. At the walk-in centre we have used them to help placate five youngsters already and the effect has been amazing. In most cases they’ve gone from tears to smiles in minutes.”
The walk-in centre and minor injury units operate as an alternative to accident and emergency or GP surgeries. The aim of the centres, where staff can cope with a whole host of minor injuries and illnesses, is to ease pressure on other parts of the NHS and improve the service to patients.
Ian Simpson, Chairman of the Freemasons’ TLC Appeal, said: “We are always very happy to support worthy initiatives within the local community and it is particularly enjoyable to help where children are concerned.”
